31: Joining woman community, network and support groups
Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be sharing with you on about joining woman community, network and support groups.
I am the only child, my parents were divorced and I been alone on my own for 21 years of my life. I would decide which secondary school to go to , which CCA to participate and what JC to go to and which private diploma should I attend with. Along the way, I do have friends who gave advice but I did not have family member who are senior or anyone who been there done that to mentor me and guide me in life and career direction.
Having said that, being prefect and house captain do give me the support in being part of a community and with the guidance of teacher in our school work and school events.
In the office, we I participated in teams projects, corporate events such as dinner and dance activities where I got to interact with colleagues from other departments and teams.
Having corporate coach the last 7 years have also helped to be accountable to someone of my goals and what I need to do and get myself out of comfort zone. My coach has also supported me to think things differently and with his corporate and business experience able to coached me to think not as an employee mindset but employer mindset. That’s how I got the credibility and trust of management and bosses every company that I work with.
Though I am extrovert but I am not one who would enjoy networking sessions but I will do it if it is required of my job whether is internal and external. Get to know new people during seminars, conferences and events where other than knowing the speakers and gaining knowledge, opportunity to know who are the experts in the industry and learn from them.
I will join some Human Resources community where there are programs for members and events I can join. Usually, they will be on my linked or facebook friends .
Now I want to start online business, I started mentoring with Genecia Alluora from Soul Rich Woman and be part of the leader excellence team. Being in the Soul Rich Community, I am so encoraged with many woman who have their own struggles and failures but overcome their fear, took the courage, ask for help and be successful. Most importantly, is to support woman to be successful and have win win for all.
Support groups are also important. I have support group fpr parents that’s where I received information that I am not aware or reminders if my kids have homework to complete. I also learnt from them various interventions on device management. Tuition contacts.
Breastfeeding support group Facebook. Hear their experience and stories.
Attend talks and lessons with the group.
Support group for my mum – therapists, Nancy , Private nurse for bedsores.
Takeaway
Get out of comfort zone to join a community, networking sessions or support group.
Be proactive in searching for something that works for us, we can try and attend and see what we are comfortable with.
Schedule time aside each week or month to attend networking sessions, check in with support groups or community so we know we are not alone and there is a small group who we can rely on.
