Welcome to Woman Leadership show. I'm Janet and in this episode, I will be sharing with you what happened when I was in debt.
When I first started working for few years, I was able to apply for credit card.
As I was young and wanted to look good and feel good, I went into splurging on myself by signing up slimming packages. When I signed up they would upsell more things and I ended with more debts. As I was only earning less than $2000, I had to pay for the debts which almost 5 figure.
I was lost and do not know who to turn to. I did not want to share with my late mum as she been asking me to save and yet I still landed in debt. I turned into alcohol drinking from home to drown my sorrows and hoping that it will be better the next day. That was before my conversion to Islam.
I did not want my friends to know as I have my pride and wanted to be seen as am doing okay and not someone with a debt almost 5 figure. I felt lost and no one to turn to. As the interest was rolling and I could only catch up anymore, I finally took the courage to tell my husband who was my boyfriend then that I needed the money to pay off the debts as I could not catch up with the repayment every month. He was shocked to know that and was worried for me and lent me the momney to pay back the credit. I would need to pay him back the loan as he wanted me to learn the value of money and not taking it for granted. I was glad that he did as it taught me a lesson about managing my expenses and manage my money habit.
My Takeaways
When I was in debt, I did not know how to clear my debts and grow my money. I did not know who to go to and felt at loss of what to do. I decided to ask for help from my husband and we work out a solution. Importantly, I learned through the experience and was able to manage my money regarding signing packages. Now I will pay in lump sum that means I pay what I can afford and not rolling my money.
I would use one credit card only so I can track the spending and limit myself to maximum $1k installment plan if required.
It is important to have someone who can support you in this journey so as to provide you the guidance and work out solutions to resolve the solution. I lhave also learned that teaching the person how to manage money is better than lending the person money as without good money habits, the person will not be able to continue to manage their money whether is small or big amounts.
